Embracing Strength: Navigating Breast Cancer as a Nurse

I know what it is like to get the dx of cancer and think……

Is my life over……..

Will I be able to work as a Nurse…….

Stop!

Change your mindset!

Embrace these Strategies!

  1. Acknowledge the fear, embrace resilience:
    • It is normal to fear losing your job, Remember that your dedication, knowledge, and skills as a nurse remain intact despite the diagnosis.
  2. Open communication with employers:
    • Establishing open and honest communication with your employer is vital. Notify them about your diagnosis, ensuring confidentiality, and discuss your treatment plan. Together, you can explore accommodations, such as modified schedules or temporary role adjustments, that can help you continue working during treatment.
  3. Seek support from colleagues:
    • Reach out to your colleagues, share your journey, and ask for support that you may need to cover your job while on leave. My colleagues were very supportive and ensured that I didn’t worry about not being there to do my job.
  4. Utilize available resources:
    • Research the Susan G. Komen Foundation or National Breast Cancer Foundation to identify support for healthcare professionals facing a cancer diagnosis. Review with HR what is available to manage time off while needing treatment.
  5. Prioritize self-care:
    • During Cancer treatment and afterwards ensure that you take care of yourself. Eat, sleep and exercise. Spend time doing what excites you. Spend time with the ones that matter most.

I am a breast cancer survivor. I did not lose my job rather my company supported me and I actually was promoted to a corporate position upon returning from my treatment. It is normal to have all those overwhelming feelings but remember that you have the knowledge and skill set that makes you valuable. You as a nurse can navigate this challenging time while continuing to excel in your career. Remember to prioritize you during this time.

The strategies you have outlined, such as open communication with employers and prioritizing self-care, are crucial for navigating this difficult time. I was wondering, what advice would you give to healthcare professionals who may not have as supportive of an employer as you did? Thank you for sharing your experience and insights.
