The holiday season is upon us, bringing with it a mix of emotions for everyone. While many people look forward to celebrating with their families, it’s important to remember that healthcare is a 24/7 job, and nursing home staff may have to work during the holidays. This can be challenging, both physically and emotionally.
Supporting Staff During the Holidays
Working on holidays means that nursing home staff may miss out on their own family celebrations. This can be difficult and may lead to feelings of sadness or frustration. Additionally, the demands of their jobs can leave them fatigued and drained.
To increase staff morale during this time, it’s crucial to provide support and understanding. Consider offering flexible scheduling options, allowing staff to have some time off to celebrate with their loved ones. Organizing staff appreciation events, such as holiday parties or small gestures of gratitude, can also go a long way in boosting morale.
Creating a Sense of Family for Residents
The holiday season can be particularly challenging for residents who don’t have family to visit them. Nursing home staff play a vital role in providing emotional support and companionship during this time.
Staff members can make a significant impact by going the extra mile to ensure that residents feel loved and cared for. This can include organizing special activities, creating personalized gifts, or simply spending quality time with residents. These acts of kindness can help create a sense of family and belonging, making the holidays a little brighter for everyone involved.
Fostering a Positive Work Environment
Despite the challenges, being a nursing home staff member also comes with many positive aspects. The work they do has a profound impact on the lives of residents, and this can be incredibly rewarding.
From helping residents with daily tasks to being a source of comfort and companionship, nursing home staff have the opportunity to make a difference every day. The joy and gratitude they receive from residents can be a powerful motivator, reminding them of the meaningful work they are doing.
Innovative way to measure staff morale:
Want to measure staff Morale??? The following is from link above:

- Find a large, clear jar or vase.
- Use 3 different marbles: one color for GOOD, one color for FAIR, and one color for POOR.
- Place container in a central location for all staff, along with the 3 bowls of colored marbles. Please make sure the marbles are not within reach of the residents or visitors (perhaps in the employee break room or another secure site residents or visitors do not usually enter).
- Ask staff to place a marble in the jar that indicates their morale level on this day. (You will not get all employees, but this will give you a baseline.)
- Count the marbles out to see how many for each color or take a picture of the jar for visual reference. (This picture could be good on a communication board.)
- Conduct the marble game each month over 3 months to see how the colors change
The goal is to see more GOOD marbles filling the container.
The resource that is listed in the link above also provides ways to increase staff morale. Some suggestions include:
“Keep the staff break room stocked with snacks and drinks. Have the kitchen put a pot of soup in the break room 2 or 3 times a week.”
“Hide an object somewhere in the facility and post a clue every hour until someone finds the object for a small prize”
“Have simple hall, unit or shift contests with small prizes. They can decorate doors or halls.” This is especially fun around the holidays as each unit can decorate their own units for whichever Holiday is occurring during the month.
“Give “on the spot” rewards (sticker, small gift card, $1 scratch-off games, promotional item) when you see them setting good examples”
Conclusion
As we navigate the holiday season, let’s take a moment to appreciate and support the nursing home staff who work tirelessly to care for our loved ones. By understanding their challenges, creating a sense of family for residents, and fostering a positive work environment, we can help increase staff morale and make the holidays a special time for everyone involved.
Remember, a small act of kindness can go a long way. Whether it’s expressing gratitude, offering support, or simply taking the time to listen, let’s show our appreciation for the dedicated individuals who make a difference in nursing homes every day.
