Transforming Care: Addressing Staffing Needs in Nursing Homes to Elevate Specialist Roles
Staffing in nursing homes plays a pivotal role in shaping the quality of care that residents receive. Feedback from both dedicated staff and residents consistently underscores staffing as their foremost concern. Recognizing this, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has initiated a national Nursing Home Staffing Campaign. This ambitious effort seeks to boost the number of nurses in nursing homes, as well as at state agencies responsible for ensuring compliance with health and safety standards.
As a former facility MDS nurse, I am heartened to see the recognition of the Resident Assessment Coordinator as a specialized role within this initiative. This position is crucial for assessing resident needs and creating personalized, resident-driven care plans. It is my belief that we should remain focused on our specialized duties, avoiding on-call rotations or being pulled to the floor. While equipped with valuable clinical skills, our expertise in assessments is indispensable and cannot be easily substituted if diverted to other tasks.
I am grateful for the recognition of this role as a critical component in delivering quality care. By allowing Resident Assessment Coordinators to concentrate on their specialized functions, we can enhance care outcomes for residents. This campaign not only strives to increase staffing numbers but also aims to elevate and acknowledge the vital contribution of these key roles in providing exceptional care and ensuring resident protection.
